Want to be an entrepreneur? Hone your skills

August 13, 2014

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably spent a large portion of your employed days working to build someone else’s dream. It’s certainly possible to experience benefits from working for a business that you do not own. However, some people reach a point where they just can’t or don’t want to do it any longer. They are fueled by a different impulse, a drive to create something that’s all their own.

These people are commonly known as entrepreneurs. Do you feel the impulse to say goodbye to your current job and strike out on your own? If so, you might be the type of person that would be well-suited to starting your own business.

Jessica Stillman discusses this attitude in an article for Inc. magazine. She notes that there comes a time in an individual’s career where its time to leave that dead-end job. The key is to know when.

If you have the opportunity to learn new skills and expertise at your job, including the chance to gain valuable insight through working with a mentor, it may be worth it to stay in your current career and hone these skills. The knowledge and experience that you gain will help you later on when you decide to start your own business.

However, if you’re in a position where you do not find yourself gaining these valuable insights, it might be time to learn the entrepreneurial ropes elsewhere. Or, take the leap and start your own venture.
