South by Southwest event highlights Latinos in tech

March 10, 2014

Every year, Austin's South by Southwest (SXSW) is humming with activity. One of the biggest annual conferences, it blends marketing, film, music and tech, and brings together a wide range of people interested in discussing and learning about those subjects.

For Hispanic entrepreneurs, this year's lineup is particularly interesting, as it contained a unique set of panels from experienced innovator Mitch Kapor.

The all-day event, called Latin@s in Tech, featured a wide variety of panels on the issues and breakthroughs experienced by Hispanic entrepreneurs in digital fields. Not only was it completely sold out, it drew people who had never been to Austin before and came solely for the benefit of hearing what the speakers had to say and sharing their perspectives.

One particular problem with Silicon Valley that Kapor noted was the lack of empathy. He commented on the myth of meritocracy in the field, noting that social capital is never evenly distributed, and that helping disadvantaged groups leverage and increase theirs is a worthwhile goal.

People in Austin took note, and in great numbers. Kety Esquivel, who co-produced the event, described the scene in an interview with Forbes Magazine.

"After years of trying to move this issue forward, I was incredibly grateful to look out into the audience and see a standing room only group of Latino entrepreneurs, investors, CEOs, founders, coders and other Latinos in Tech inspired by each other and the impact we could have in the world," she said.
