Is there a market for your business idea? How to find out

December 23, 2014

You may think your business idea is great, but ultimately it doesn’t matter what you think. If you’re the only one who is interested in whatever product or service you envision providing at your company, you’re not going to succeed. You should only start a company if there is a market for your idea. The question becomes, how do you determine if there’s a market? The staff at Entrepreneur Media recently sought to find the answer.

The staff at the popular publication wrote a book designed to provide aspiring entrepreneurs the guidance needed to determine if their venture was worthwhile. The book’s key points were then listed in a recent article. In it, the staff stressed the importance of research.

“Wait! Before you shift into high gear, you must determine whether there really is a market for your product or service. Not only that, you need to ascertain what, if any, fine-tuning is needed. Quite simply, you must conduct market research,” the article says. “Consider market research an investment in your future. If you make the necessary adjustments to your product or service now, you’ll save money in the long run.”

There are three key areas entrepreneurs should focus on when conducting market research:
  • Industry information: Look for the latest trends. Instead of focusing on what happened in the industry related to your business idea, look at what’s going to happen. How does your idea fit in with the future of the industry?
  • Consumer close-up: Who exactly is going to buy your product or service? What are their specific needs? What are they interested in? Creating a buyer persona will help keep your research focused on the right people.
  • Competition close-up: What are others in your industry doing? What’s working and what isn’t? You probably feel your idea is unique and special, but it is probably based on something that already exists in the market. Identifying this will help you research your competitors.

Research can go a long way towards figuring out your market, and it is a huge component of starting your own business. Remember, you must also handle other important areas, such as incorporating your business. Working with a professional in this field can help you learn how to incorporate, which will go a long way towards ensuring the success of your organization.
