How past experiences help build the foundation for business success

August 25, 2014

When you set out to start a business, you might be wondering what it will take to be successful. Drive and ambition are parts of the equation, as are preparation and perseverance. Everyone has the potential to nurture these qualities within themselves. By looking at your past, you can see how previous experiences have prepared you for the challenge of entrepreneurship.

For example, entrepreneur Chet Kittleson explains in an article for Fast Company how his past experience working in “dead-end jobs” actually helped prepare him for his career as an entrepreneur.

Each position helped Kittleson gain an essential skill that would be useful down the road. These skills include empathy, the ability to see things from others’ perspectives, customer service skills and more. Although the jobs he held during these times may have seemed unremarkable, they actually helped to lay a solid foundation.

It may seem like your past work experiences are completely unrelated to the venture you want to build. However, as this example demonstrates, they can actually be quite relevant. Take an inventory of your own past. What experiences and challenges have you had that will contribute to your ability to run a successful small business?
