Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

May 02, 2014

Thinking about starting a business? Entrepreneurship may not be for the faint of heart, as it inherently is a risky endeavor. The risk can be worth the reward, however, as the leader of your business you get to call the shots. This also means that you are responsible for the direction your business takes, and your success.

So how did some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs achieve extremely high levels of success? It turns out there are inherent traits that define an entrepreneur.

Are you curious, creative, communicative? Do you have a vision about what you want and who you are? Are you a natural leader unafraid to take risks?

If you answered “yes” to the above questions then you might be a natural entrepreneur. While those general principles are good, there are even more specific characteristics of highly-successful entrepreneurs as determined through research from London think-tank the Centre for Policy Studies.

According to Inc., the Centre’s research, which looked at 1,000 self-made billionaires, or “SuperEntrepreneurs,” turned up some interesting information about these highly-successful people. It found that the type of venture chosen played a role in whether the entrepreneur became a billionaire. Finance, retail, biotech and IT were all more likely to receive funding. This makes them a good choice for an entrepreneurial pursuit.

The research also showed that 84 percent of SuperEntrepreneurs from the United States were college graduates. Also an entrepreneur’s chances of receiving funding could possibly increase because they had higher education. Location was another important factor in the study, which found that the United States was home to the third highest concentration of SuperEntrepreneurs.
